F & C Graduation -

“At first I had a very different idea of you, and now we are friends.”

~ Alejandra

We just celebrated 10 beautiful artisans who graduated from our program on Thursday!   Cross-cultural reconciliation is a big part of what God does through Fashion & Compassion, and the quote above is what Alejandra, one of our artisans from Guatemala, said to her new friend, who we’ll call Azyan.  “Azyan” is a political refugee from Afghanistan who sought asylum in the US, so her name cannot be shared.  Alejandra was communicating that she had a preconceived idea of what Azyan was like, especially since Azyan was the first Muslim Alejandra had ever met.  Upon meeting her and growing in relationship with her, all of her assumptions and judgments were washed away. She discovered how warm and inviting Azyan was and how alike they were in so many ways.  Alejandra and Azyan spent a lot of time during our jewelry project exchanging support for one another, and when Alejandra's mother passed away in April, Azyan sat and comforted her with encouraging words.

It’s beautiful to see our graduates look at one another through a Christ-like lens, as opposed to making assumptions and judgments based on their country of origin or faith.

Rather than viewing someone based on where they are from, or their political party, or their status in life, we pray that we can all look at others through a lens of faith, meeting one another where they are, just as Christ meets us.  At F&C we are continually striving to encourage our artisans, and one another, to look at others through our lens of faith.

During our projects, we celebrate women from different countries coming together to heal, reconcile, and grow in their faith. They are building new communities and crossing divides as they also learn work readiness skills and grow in more ways than you can imagine.  Come visit us to find out more!

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”  Matthew 5:9
